Teen Drama: Canadianity Style

When I think about the 80s and 90s, one thing that stands out to me is the popularity of the “The Teen”.  Whether it’s teen heartthrobs like New Kids The Block, or popular sitcoms like Blossom, The Teen reigned supreme from a pop culture standpoint.

In the spirit of Canadianity, I present to you some of the most popular Teen Dramas that graced our TV screens during the 80s and 90s.

Degrassi Junior High And Degrassi High

Degrassi was one of the first shows that showcased the reality of The Teen in the 80s.  They didn’t shy away from topics that would normally be considered tabo in mainstream media and is often credited for pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable on television.  Covering topics from teen pregnancy, drugs and suicide, Degrassi paved the way for future teen dramas in terms of acceptable topics to show on TV.

Catwalk

This was a fav for me personally.  Even though the main characters weren’t teens, it had everything a teen could ask for – romance, fashion and music.  I am pretty sure I also named my first guitar Watson!  Also, having a breakdancer in the band was pretty rad!  And we can’t forget about Neve Campbell gettin’ her start here!

Ready Or Not

If any show encompassed how small a teenagers world was, it was this one.  While they covered a wide range of issues, it shined a light on things that all teenagers cared about – acne, music, puberty and dramatic fights over what amounted to nothing.  Plus Busy and Amanda were just badass.  Funny note here too – the guitarist from Catwalk was in a few episodes!

Breaker High

I never personally got too much into this one, but from what I remember is did a good job mixing drama with comedy.  And knowing that Ryan Gosling was in this makes it even that much more dreamy.  And what teen wouldn’t want to be in high school on a fucken cruise ship?!
